Why We Chose Los Gigantes Over Playa de las Americas for Our Family Holiday

When most people think of Tenerife, Playa de las Americas is often one of the first places that comes to mind. With its busy beaches, nightlife and endless entertainment, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular.

For our family holiday, though, we chose Los Gigantes – and after spending a week there, I can honestly say I’d make the same choice again.

A Quieter Side of Tenerife

As a family travelling with five children, including an 18-month-old toddler, we weren’t looking for nightlife or busy tourist strips.

What appealed to us about Los Gigantes was the slower pace. It felt more relaxed, less crowded and much more suited to the kind of holiday we enjoy as a family.

Instead of loud bars and packed streets, we found beautiful views, waterfront walks and a much calmer atmosphere.

The Scenery is Incredible

The first thing that struck us about Los Gigantes was the scenery.

The famous cliffs are even more impressive in real life and seem to follow you wherever you go. Whether we were walking to the marina, sitting on the beach or enjoying dinner, there always seemed to be a breathtaking view nearby.

It felt very different from other resorts we’ve visited and gave the area a unique charm.

Walking Along the Front

One of our favourite things to do was simply walk.

We spent time wandering around the marina, exploring the seafront and stopping to admire the natural pools along the coastline.

Although we didn’t go into the natural pools ourselves due to some of the safety concerns we’d read about beforehand, they were still beautiful to look at and well worth seeing.

The area felt easy to explore and there was always something interesting to stop and look at along the way.

The Beach

We also spent time on the black sand beach near the marina.

With the dramatic cliffs in the background, it felt completely different from any beach we’d visited before. It became one of our favourite spots to sit, relax and take in the views.

Our Favourite Restaurant

One restaurant that really stood out was Sorriso.

Located just a short walk along the seafront from the marina, it offered beautiful sunset views and quickly became one of our favourite places to eat during the holiday.

The walk there was lovely in itself, especially in the evening as the sun began to set.

Perfect for Families

Travelling with an 18-month-old means holidays look a little different these days.

Aria loved walking around and exploring everything she could find. Los Gigantes felt like the perfect place for that. It was relaxed enough that we never felt rushed and scenic enough that even simple walks became part of the holiday experience.

While the older children enjoyed the marina, beach and boat trips, Aria was happiest simply wandering around and taking everything in.

Would We Choose Los Gigantes Again?

Without hesitation.

If you’re looking for lively nightlife and busy resorts, Playa de las Americas may be the better choice.

But if you’re looking for stunning scenery, a more relaxed atmosphere and somewhere that feels a little less hectic, Los Gigantes is hard to beat.

For our family, it offered everything we wanted from a Tenerife holiday – beautiful views, great family memories and a chance to slow down and enjoy time together.
