For our first wedding anniversary, Leon and I wanted something completely different.
Life with children can be busy, noisy and full of routines, so instead of booking a city break or luxury hotel, we chose something much simpler – a converted shipping container in the countryside of Felindre, Swansea.
Of course, it wasn’t just the two of us. Like many parents of a breastfed toddler, our little sidekick Aria came too.
What drew us to this stay wasn’t endless activities or tourist attractions. It was the complete opposite. We wanted peace, quiet and absolutely nothing to do.
From the moment we arrived, we felt ourselves slow down. There were no traffic noises, no busy roads and no schedules to follow. The only sounds we could hear were sheep in the nearby fields, birds singing and the crackling of the fire pit as evening arrived.
One of my favourite parts of the stay was simply sitting in the hanging swing chair with a blanket, watching the countryside around us while Aria explored and Leon kept the fire going. It sounds simple, but that’s exactly what made it so special.
Before children, an anniversary might have meant cocktails, late nights and lie-ins. This anniversary looked very different. It involved toddler snacks, breastfeeding, early mornings and making memories together as a family.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
As the sun went down and the stars appeared overhead, we settled into the log-fired hot tub and soaked up the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect reminder that sometimes the best escapes aren’t the ones packed with plans – they’re the ones that allow you to simply be.
